The final workshop of the European projects ADASE 2, AIDER and CarTALK 2000
and forum on 'Intelligent vehicles driven on intelligent roads - a view on the future'

has taken place at Centro Ricerche Fiat, Orbassano, Italy,  on 14.07.2004

The final ADASE results were presented and discussed at a common workshop with the IST projects AIDER and CarTALK 2000. The forum on 'Intelligent vehicles on inteligent roads' concentrated on further research needs for co-operative systems, and potential future co-operations.

The presentations given at the meeting are now available for download. Please feel free to get your copy.

Results of the expert workshops on sensors and actuators & effects and policy

The report of the ADASE workshop on sensors and actuators,  took place in Brussels on 02.12.2003, is now available on the page on expert workshops. Also the report and the slides of the ADASE workshop on effects and policy, held on 17-18.05.2004 in Stuttgart, can be found there.

Mission of the thematic network
Advanced Driver Assistance Systems in Europe (ADASE)

Road and traffic safety in Europe has already achieved a comparatively high standard. However, improvement is still needed. Europe aims to decrease yearly casualties by 50% over the next ten years from currently 40,000.

Efforts to increase safety using passive safety technologies alone may deliver only moderate gains. Active safety systems in conjunction with infrastructure based roadside equipment and measures promise efficient safety systems for the future.

These systems go beyond the sole mitigation of accidents and will work towards avoiding collisions before they occur. Active safety systems thus express a quantum leap in traffic safety. For their introduction, essential boundary conditions have to be considered.

  • Drivers must cope with, and be able to accept such systems,
  • Reliability of the systems must be of highest standards,
  • Systems have to be interoperable.

ADASE is an EC IST funded thematic network that will help to introduce and implement active safety systems by

  • Harmonising and communicating active safety functions,
  • Identifying technological needs and focussing on essentials,
  • Preparing architectures, roadmaps and standards.

ADASE activities aim at preparing the baseline and ground for these measures.

ADASE Objectives

To achieve its aims ADASE covers a comprehensive range of activities. Its detailed objectives are

  • to use the state-of-the-art knowledge to generate corresponding road maps and guidance,
  • to facilitate the information exchange within the cluster of projects related to ADA systems and transport,
  • to organise in-depth expert workshops on selected topics , and
  • to disseminate the resulting findings and information to all relevant users and user groups and the general public.

The ADASE roadmap indicates the future development of Advanced Driver Assistance Systems in Europe. The roadmap covers the dimensions technology, policy and practice.

Within the cluster management the information exchange between relevant running and upcoming projects is guaranteed. In concertation meetings of the ADASE cluster projects access to experts in the related projects is established and a flow of information and feedback is assured.

The introduction of ADASE systems requires a holistic process and therefore all major players in the ADASE 2 environment have to be involved. Together with transport authorities, road providers E&S industry and automotive industry ADASE 2 organises expert workshops on the key areas of importance in the deployment of Advanced Driver Assistance Systems. These are:

Legal aspects and human machine interface (HMI),
Architecture and technology roadmap,
Road infrastructure design and road-vehicle, vehicle-vehicle communication systems,
Sensor technologies,
Effects on safety, throughput and comfort (presentation of preliminary effects).

The generation of public and political awareness in the functions, performance and efficiency of ADASE 2 is mandatory. By use of different media such as web, newsletters etc. the gathered information will be disseminated world wide and be available for all of the possible users of ADASE.
